Today's walk to Puenta la Reina was just under 24 kilometers or about 15 miles. It took awhile to get out of Pamplona, and you had to keep an eye out for the yellow-arrowed Camino markers or you would suddenly find yourself off route. We found a bakery/coffee shop before we had gotten out of the city, which was fine with me...caffeine, chocolate, and camaraderie. The owner of the shop had unbelievably long hair...he said he hadn't cut it for 26 years.
The elevation gain the past two days has certainly been less than the first couple of days, but it hasn't been flat. Today we walked up to a ridge where there were wind turbines and some peregrino figures in iron.. The place is called Alto del Perdòn. Legend says that a young man was ascending the mountain when the devil appeared and offered him water if only he would deny God. This happened several times until the Apostle chased him away and offered the Pilgrim water to quench his thirst.
Polly, Francine and I have been leaving in the morning together and regrouping at the end of the day. It's a nice way to share a meal and the insights of the day and still be able to walk in solitude. We ended up with burgers in Pamplona...very rare and very good and a bottle of hard apple cider from the Basque region. It wasn't a great cider...Francine was not a fan...but I will be on the lookout for cidré. Tonight we will have a pilgrim meal with all the other walkers who are staying here. I'm hungry.
